Trying to continue to maintain normalcy, balance work and life responsibilities, while attempting to be there for everyone else may cause increased symptoms of depression. Persistent symptoms of depression should not be seen as normal and should not be dismissed or ignored. Underlying issues may be the root of unresolved depression. When depression begins to interfere with your ability to function each day, it may be time to consider seeing a mental health professional. You are not alone. What is Depression?

Depression is a constant state of sadness or loss of interest in life. Depression is a normal response to instances of loss, disappointment, and/or change, but is not to be seen as normal when it inhibits your ability to complete day-to-day tasks or your ability to function as you normally would.  As soon as you realize your depression is becoming overwhelming, it may be time to see a mental health therapist and/or seek medical assistance.

The symptoms of depression that may require therapy and/or medication management are:

  • Persistent Sadness and/or Anger — about nothing at all or about day-to-day situations

  • Mood Swings — that fluctuate frequently and may include crying spells and anger

  • Unexplained Aches and Pains — that tend to come and go frequently

  • Inability to Focus or Concentrate ---  and feeling as though your memory is foggy

  • Poor Hygiene — due to no motivation to practice self-care

  • Chronic Fatigue — due to low energy and irregular sleeping patterns

  • Appetite Issues — due to eating too much or not much at all

  • Thoughts of Death or Suicide — due to feelings of helplessness, hopelessness or guilt

Types of Depression Disorders

Individuals are usually diagnosed with a depression disorder whenever the symptoms persists for extended periods of time and have begun to affect one's ability to function from day-to-day with tasks completion and activeness.  Depression may seem normal because of contributing circumstances, but it is not, especially when your ability to function daily has been interrupted.

Some of the different types of depression disorders are:

  • Major Depressive Disorder --- a person either has depressed mood or loss of interest with four other depressive symptoms

  • Dysthymia Disorder (Persistent DD) --- a person has depressed mood with at least two other depressive symptoms

  • Postpartum Depression Disorder: may occur after a woman has given birth

  • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder --- when a person has severe temper outbursts w/underlying persistent anger.

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder --- Significant affective symptoms that usually occur a week before a woman's menstruation is to begin
